‘Nothing Has Been Allocated Out of That Fund’: Administration Pushback Against False Claim Continues
Nothing has been spent from $6 billion which Republicans falsely claim paid for attack
Days after terrorist attacks erupted against Israel, Biden administration officials still are having to debunk false claims spread by Republicans that $6 billion in assets recently unfrozen for Iran paid for that Hamas violence.
A variety of Republicans — including a number of those running for president — have falsely claimed that $6 billion in oil revenue that the Biden administration unfroze as a result of a prisoner exchange with Iran, which has historically funded Hamas, was used to carry out the surprise and lethal attacks which were unleashed Saturday.
Despite multiple sources — including a reporter on the right-wing Fox News network — debunking them, those claims continue to be repeated as fact.
John Kirby, the top White House foreign policy and military spokesman, continued to push back against the disinformation in news interviews Tuesday.
“I think it’s important for people to remember that not a single dollar of that funds has gone to Iran. Not one, not any,” he said. “Nothing has been allocated out of that fund.”
Kirby denied that somehow the $6 billion is evidence of a lapse in the Biden administration enforcing international sanctions against Iran.
“Have to push back there. It’s not we’re not enforcing sanctions. We have been enforcing them. We’ve added sanctions. We’ve sanctioned 400 entities in Iran in the beginning of this administration let alone the sanctions that came before us,” he said in an interview with Fox News. “As for the fungability: The Iranian regime wouldn’t see it. Vendors we approved to provide humanitarian assistance to get directly to the Iranian people. The regime would never see or feel that and they haven’t asked for it.”
