‘Oh, My God, Democrats, Get Your Sh*t Together’
TV hosts plead with Dems to resolve debate over Biden’s future candidacy
Some very recognizable faces are beseeching Democrats to finally resolve the issue of President Biden’s continued candidacy for reelection — one way or another — lest they hand the coming election to Donald Trump and his far-right agenda.
Hosts in the news media — and even others beyond the traditional press — are reminding Democrats of the stakes of this year’s presidential election and are pushing them to stop dithering, and either get behind Biden as the nominee or pull the trigger and go ahead and replace him as their nominee this fall.
Top Democrats continue to debate Biden’s future atop the presidential ticket following his abysmal performance in last month’s debate against Trump.
A handful of Democrats on Capitol Hill — and big donors like actor George Clooney — are still calling for Biden to drop out of the race, even after he has insisted that he is staying in and is up for the job.
But the ongoing indecision only will help election Trump, who has vowed a term of revenge and “retribution,” should he be allowed to return to the White House.
Late-night comedian Seth Meyers delivered that message, both with force and with laughs, during his program Wednesday evening.
“Oh my God, Democrats, get your sh*t together!” Meyers implored. “There’s still four months left to go and you’re already admitting defeat and holding a funeral? And this is like a football coach giving a half time speech that ends with, ‘clear eyes, full hearts, we’re going to get [bleep] crushed!’
“Don’t just mope around, you know, do something. You think Biden should step aside, then tell him to get out and start the process of replacing him. If you think he should stay in, then get to work and right the ship now,” he added. “But this melancholy, hand-wringing, woe-was-me bullsh*t is so exhausting.
“No one cares how sad you guys are. Democracy’s on the line. A pathological, megalomaniac is currently leading in the polls. And if he wins, you won’t be able to distract yourself by looking at porn, because it will be banned,” Meyers cracked, to laughter from his studio audience. “Even the soft-core stuff on Instagram. That’s right. They’re coming for the side boob! Explain that to your teenage son!
“Whether you think Biden should stay in and revamp his campaign or get out and make way for someone else, Democrats don’t seem to be treating the situation with the urgency it requires,” he said.
MSNBC host Joe Scarborough took on the same topic — minus the laughs — the next morning, on Thursday’s Morning Joe.
Scarborough invoked the Bible — and President Abraham Lincoln’s quotation from it — to make his point: “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”
“This morning, we report to you that there is a deep rupture running throughout the Democratic Party, a split tearing at the party’s very foundation, a divide that’s only going to serve to elect a man who has repeatedly promised to be a dictator on day one,” he said.
Scarborough summarized the debate by recounting Biden’s accomplishments as president, on one hand, and the conviction of those Democrats who don’t believe the president can win, on the other.
“Democrats have to unite against the immediate threat before America’s 240-year constitutional republic is no more,” he said. “Lincoln finished the 1858 speech telling his fellow party members, ‘Against strange, discordant — even hostile elements — we gathered from four winds and we fought the battle through, under the constant hot fire of a disciplined, proud, and pampered enemy. Did we brave all then to falter now? Now when that same enemy is wavering, disserved and belligerent? Lincoln said, ‘We shall not fail if we stand firm. We shall not fail if we stand together.’”
