On Russia Standoff, McConnell Makes Bipartisanship Clear
In stop out in DC, Biden says no to US troops in Ukraine
As President Biden continues to be faced with the potential need for US involvement to defend Ukraine from potential invasion Tuesday, he received at least one strong show of support from Republicans.
Working in concert with overseas allies, Biden is looking at options for the United States — including the US military — to protect Ukraine from a possible imminent invasion by Vladimir Putin's Russia.
Whatever help that Biden ultimately offers up, he’s taken inserting troops within Ukraine's borders off the table.
The president, at an unannounced stop at a Washington DC, business Tuesday, talked about the tense situation in Ukraine and told reporters there is not going to be US forces inside the former Soviet republic.
Tensions between the two former Soviet republics are running extraordinarily high as a Russian troop build-up near the two nations' borders is spurring fears that Moscow could launch an invasion. An estimated 125,000 Russian troops are at or close to the Ukraine border.
Ukraine has warned that Russia is trying to destabilize the country ahead of any planned military invasion. Western powers have repeatedly cautioned Russia against further aggressive moves against Ukraine.
The Kremlin denies it is planning to attack and argues that NATO support for Ukraine -- including increased weapons supplies and military training -- constitutes a threat on Russia's western flank.
Biden held a secure video call with European leaders Monday. They reiterated their continued concern about the Russian military build-up on Ukraine’s borders and expressed their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The leaders underscored their shared desire for a diplomatic resolution to the current tensions, according to a White House statement about the call.
Leaders in Congress also are looking to deter Russian aggression, and Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell offered the president a rare bit of Republican backing.
Biden is “moving in the right direction,” the Kentucky Republican said.
