One-time Democratic Candidate Gabbard Reemerges To Plead for Ukraine
Former congresswoman is immediately mocked for her message
Tulsi Gabbard — the former congresswoman from Hawaii who made a failed bid for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination —attempted to reemerge on the world stage Saturday with a plea for an end to the invasion of Ukraine.
Gabbard, while once at least nominally a Democrat, appeared to win more fans on the political right with her quixotic run for the White House.
Since leaving Congress, Gabbard has made occasional appearances on the right-wing Fox News network, going so far as labelling her former colleague, Rep Adam Schiff (D-Calif), a “domestic terrorist.”
On Saturday, she took to Twitter, where she spoke directly to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who late last week ordered a full-on invasion of Russia's sovereign and democratic neighbor to the west, Ukraine.
“President Putin, you’ve made your point. Before it’s too late, stop the attack now. I have both Ukrainian and Russian friends and know that they have aloha—respect and love—for each other like brothers and sisters. It’s clear the Russian and Ukrainian people just want to live in peace, so I implore you to end this assault now, before it gets to the point of no return and the suffering becomes unimaginable,” she said in a video message.
The former congresswoman was immediately mocked for the tweet.
“Are you…fucking serious? There is no way you have friends,” responded Rachel Vindman, whose husband, Alexander, was a key figure in the Ukraine scandal which sparked former president Donald Trump's first impeachment.
“Tulsi, would you say that I was a misogynist if I told you to go screw yourself and called you a lying, hypocritical traitor?” asked Jon Cooper, a high-level Democratic activist who is popular on social media.
Gabbard has long had a controversial history with authoritarian figures, having come under fire for friendliness towards Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad.
