OPINION | ‘Repent’: Marjorie Taylor Greene Clearly Shows Stakes of the Election, In One Bonkers Tweet
Congresswoman shows us where -- and when -- MAGA wants to take us
It’s often been said that Donald Trump’s slogan, “Make America Great Again” is code for a desire to take the nation back to the culture and mores of an earlier time, like the 1950s.
In truth, however, the goal of MAGA is to drag us back to an even further point in the past, namely the Dark Ages.
That’s not exaggeration, hyperbole, or fiction.
Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene, the conspiracy-mongering, far-right lawmaker from Georgia — and potential Trump 2024 running mate — just gave the game away in a totally bonkers post on social media in which she wants Americans to “repent” in order to prevent entirely scientific — and in some cases entirely foreseen — phenomena like earthquakes and solar eclipses.
“God is sending America strong signs to tell us to repent. Earthquakes and eclipses and many more things to come. I pray that our country listens,” she posted, signing off with a praying-hands emoji.
Talk about “Going Medieval.”
It would be funny, except that Greene, Trump and the rest of their crowd are completely serious.
They’re not even hiding where they want to take us, and we need to take them just as literally.
This is the world that they want to take us back to.
It was never just about “babies” and abortion for them.
Right-wing attacks on LGBTQ rights, IVF, birth control — and more — prove that.
This is about recreating a world in which pseudoscience and superstition drive policy and lawmaking, and the primacy of white, cisgender, heterosexual, Christian men is restored and unquestioned.
It's often said that American democracy itself is on the ballot this year, and that's very true.
But so is our personal freedom, and our very ability to enjoy modernity.
This year, vote like your very future depends on it.
Because it does.
