‘Ours Is A Fight for Freedom’: Harris Offers Abortion Pledge in Bold Speech
VP rouses sorority with strong remarks on the future
Vice President Kamala Harris defined her nascent campaign for president in terms of fighting for the freedoms of all Americans.
And, drawing a strong distinction with Donald Trump, the new presumptive Democratic nominee pledged to sign legislation restoring national abortion rights should she be elected to the White House in November.
Harris spoke Wednesday to a gathering of the Zeta Phi Beta sorority in Indianapolis, Ind. However, the remarks also were clearly intended to build momentum for her candidacy for the presidency which remains just days old.
Her contrast with the Trump and his running mate, Sen JD Vance of Ohio, was clear.
“These extremists want to take us back. But we are not going back. We are not going back,” Harris declared, to audience applause. “Ours is a fight for the future. And ours is a fight for freedom.
“Across our nation, we are witnessing a full-on assault on hard-fought, hard-won freedoms and rights: the freedom to vote, the freedom to be safe from gun violence, the freedom to live without fear of bigotry and hate, the freedom to love who you love openly and with pride, the freedom to learn and acknowledge our true and full history, and the freedom of a woman to make decisions about her own body and not have her government telling her what to do,” she added, to further applause.
And Harris took on her Republican opponents directly with a specific promise to restore national rights to abortion care.
“You know, when he was president, Donald Trump, the former president, handpicked three members of the United States Supreme Court, because he intended for them to overturn Roe v. Wade, the United States Supreme Court, previously the court of Thurgood and [Ruth Bader Ginsburg]. And as he intended, they did,” she said. “Well, let me tell you something: When I am president of the United States — and when Congress passes a law to restore those freedoms — I will sign it into law. We are not playing around.”
