Pelosi: ‘Driven by President Biden’s Leadership, House Democrats Have Taken Bold Leadership’
House speaker touts anti-hunger efforts
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was back in her San Francisco, Calif., district over the weekend where she touted the efforts Democrats have taken during the Biden administration in the area of fighting hunger.
The speaker made her remarks at an appearance at a local food bank, where she emphasized legislation aimed at feeding hungry children in the United States.
“Driven by President Biden's leadership, the House Democrats have taken bold leadership. We delivered $12 billion in food assistance through our American Rescue Plan. That was the first bill that the president put forth, more since then,” Pelosi said. “Enacted the Keep Kids Fed Act to offer free school meals over the summer break when kids weren’t in school.
“And why is it that kids have to qualify for meals in school? Shouldn't that just be automatic and there shouldn’t be you pay, you don’t pay? What's that? See, we always contended that the administrative cost of keeping track of who should be paying for a meal or not was not worth whatever the dynamic that it would create in school,” she added. “So, we still, obviously, are always working to improve that.”
