‘People Are Being Unlawfully Terrorized’: Trump’s Mass Deportations Are Underway
Agents capture citizens and undocumented migrants alike in raid, outraged mayor says
The mass deportations promised by Donald Trump appear to have gotten underway, as federal agents captured citizens as well in an immigration raid carried out in Newark, NJ.
That’s according to Ras J Baraka, the mayor of Newark, the most populous city in the Garden State.
Trump came into office Monday, signing several executive orders aimed at getting started on the mass deportations of migrants he promised ahead of the November elections.
Just days later, agents from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raided an unnamed Newark establishment on Thursday, according to a statement released by Baraka’s office.
Baraka said agents detained undocumented residents as well as citizens, without producing a warrant.
“One of the detainees is a U.S. military veteran who suffered the indignity of having the legitimacy of his military documentation questioned. This egregious act is in plain violation of the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees ‘the right of the people be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures….’” the mayor’s statement said.
“Newark will not stand by idly while people are being unlawfully terrorized. I will be holding a press conference in alliance with partners ready and willing to defend and protect civil and human rights. Details to come,” the statement added.
