'Please Make It Stop': When Chatting About It Only Makes Indiscretion Worse
Viral posts of Rubio's misdeed only further endangers President Zelensky
Social media has lit up like the proverbial Christmas tree Saturday, ever since it came to light that two Republican senators — Marco Rubio, of Florida, and Steve Daines, of Montana — tweeted photos of their videoconference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, after all participants on the call were told to keep quiet about the meeting.
Participants were told not to post about the call while it was ongoing because doing so could potentially tip Russian forces in Ukraine to Zelensky's location, and therefore put his life in great danger.
Zelensky has steadfastly remained in Ukraine to lead the fight against the invading Russian forces.
One of Russian leader Vladimir Putin's apparent goals for his bloody and lawless incursion into sovereign and democratic Ukraine is to install a puppet regime friendly to him, and assassinating Zelensky could well make doing so that much easier.
Voices across social media harshly castigated the US senators for their indiscretions, particularly critical of Rubio, who serves on sensitive Senate committees, and is experienced in handling sensitive information.
“Dude, what the hell is wrong with you? You are the Vice Chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence, and a Member of the Foreign Relations Committee. You were specifically asked NOT to share this briefing with Zelensky. Why would you risk his safety for a tweet?” chastised Michael Steele, a personality on MSNBC and a one-time chairman of the Republican National Committee.
“Republican Senators Marco Rubio & Steve Daines tweeted photos of their zoom mtg with #Zelensky. ALL on the zoom call were told to keep quiet about the meeting. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU! Rubio needs to be removed from Senate Intelligence & both investigated for being Russian Assets!” tweeted Democratic social media influencer Dan Pereira.
Added Olivia Troye, an American national security official who worked on national security and homeland security issues during the Trump administration, “Exactly. People like Marco Rubio don’t actually care about their role in the national security apparatus & what it means to be concerned about the safety of others above one’s own self…”
Said author and journalist Julia Ioffe: “Marco Rubio is very serious—about getting Volodymyr Zelensky killed.”
However, too often, those who took to admonish Rubio would simply post their opprobrium above a retweet of the same images which they were criticizing Rubio for posting in the first place.
“Please Make It Stop. People complaining that Marco Rubio's tweet puts Zekensky's life at risk and then quote tweeting and further amplifying Rubio's tweet,” tweeted attorney Don Lewis, without any of the original Rubio content.
(We at The Washington Current will not publish any examples of the wider posting of the Rubio tweet simply for not wanting to further endanger Zelensky's life.)
Still, while Lewis was critical of those reposting Rubio's initial indiscretions, he also took aim at the senator himself.
“Surprising that Zelensky would agree to have a call which included Trump sycophants like Marco Rubio,” Lewis said.
