Political Analyst Sabato: The Dems’ ‘Clown Car’ Has Tanked Biden’s Polls and Hurt McAuliffe’s Campaign
Congressional Dems deserve more blame than Biden, he says
Public ineptitude on the part of congressional Democrats has not only seriously hurt President Biden's political standing, but it's jeopardizing the upcoming gubernatorial election in Virginia.
That's according to Larry Sabato, a prominent political scientist and political analyst who's also a professor at the University of Virginia and founder and director of the Center for Politics, which works to promote civic engagement and participation.
Democrats have been arguing for weeks, trying to pass their Build Back Better Act over the objections of two crucial Senate holdouts, Sens Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona.
That legislation would enact much of Biden's domestic agenda ahead of next year's midterm elections.
These debates have been very public, including on cable television.
“President Biden’s ratings have sunk everywhere, and even in Virginia, which gave him a 10-point victory in 2020,” Sabato said. “The Democrats in Congress, frankly I think deserve more of the blame than President Biden. This has been a clown car, and they just can’t stop commenting publicly and they’re parading by the cameras and making it worse.
“Now, maybe if they pass something this week, you know, miracles do happen, it might lift Biden a few points and then lift [Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry] McAuliffe a few points, but they have not helped at all. They’ve hurt rather badly.”
McAuliffe's lead has shrunk to a statistical tie with Republican opponent Glenn Youngkin.
