POLITICAL PERSPECTIVE: Worried Trump Could Return as President? The Nation Might Not Last Until the Election
The once -- and maybe future -- president is encouraging defiance of Supreme Court
Like me, you’re probably worried about November’s presidential election and the possibility that Donald Trump could return to the White House.
You might be troubled by Trump’s growing authoritarianism, or his fascist language mirroring Nazi Adolf Hitler, in which the Republican refers to political opponents as “vermin,” or accuses immigrants coming to the United States of “poisoning the blood of our country.”
Otherwise, you’re outraged that the former president brags about installing the right-wing justices on the US Supreme Court who upended nearly a half-century of guaranteed national access to abortion services in 2022. Or that he that he thinks so little of women that a judge found that Trump raped a woman in New York.
Any, or all of which, are entirely justified reasons for fearing the outcome of the election.
But will the nation even make it to November?
I'm not being hyperbolic or hysterical.
Rather, we Americans appear to be facing an even more-immediate threat from Republicans — including many elected Republicans — who seem eager to do even more damage that frays the fabric which holds our nation together.
Specifically, these Republicans — who claim to revere the Constitution and the rule of law— are advocating that Texas Gov Greg Abbott (R) — ignore a ruling this week by the US Supreme Court.
A 5-4 Supreme Court decision Monday allows the federal government to remove razor wire on the border wall placed by Texas law enforcement. The government argued the wire illegally prevented them from managing the border.
(Imagine the outrage if President Biden or other leaders had simply chosen to ignore the court’s decision to overturn national abortion rights! To Republicans, hypocrisy is an alien concept.)
It will fall to Biden to enforce the high court’s Texas decision.
And an alarming number of figures on the political right are loudly talking about the Texas decision as the flashpoint for “civil war.”
The president, of course, is much more circumspect and looking to solve the issue through legal means.
Right-wingers, however, obviously are spoiling for a fight.
Trump himself — who seeks to return to an office whose sworn oath is to “faithfully execute the laws” — is publicly encouraging Abbott’s defiance.
And this crisis has given Trump lackey Marjorie Taylor Greene another reason harp on her “national divorce.”
On X (formerly known as Twitter), an account called Chuds of TikTok captioned a post: “maga is really horny for a civil war.”
Will the right really resort to devastating unlawful political violence and bloodshed that only tears our nation apart even before we cast ballots in November?
They certainly seem to be lighting the tinder. How much would it take to light the match?
