Politicians, Hollywood Publicly Stand Behind Transgender Americans
Biden speaks out, while Drew Barrymore features trans personality Dylan Mulvaney
Even in the face of bigotry, hate and legal measures against transgender Americans some prominent figures in politics and media continue to stand up for the community and attempt to lift trans folks above the hate.
Such has been the case just this week, as President Biden and popular actress and talk show host Drew Barrymore each spoke out this week, each in their own way.
Biden on Monday called out the legal efforts to deny rights to — and discriminate against — transgender youth in Florida and elsewhere.
“Transgender kids is a really harder thing. What’s going on in Florida is, as my mother would say, close to sinful. I mean, it’s just terrible what they’re doing,” the president said during an interview. “It’s not like, you know, a kid wakes up one morning and says, ‘You know, I decided I want to become a man or I want to become a woman, or I want to change.’ I mean, what — what are they thinking about here? They’re human beings.
“I mean, it just, to me is — I don’t know, it’s cruel. And the way we do it is we make sure we pass legislation like we passed on same-sex marriage. You mess with that, you’re breaking the law and you’re going to be held accountable,” he added.
Meanwhile, box-office star Barrymore elevated trans folks Tuesday with the appearance of trans activist and media personality Dylan Mulvaney on her talk show.
Barrymore asked TikTok star Mulvaney how she deals with the negativity.
“I still read the comments, but there is so much hatred directed at the trans community right now, it’s everywhere. And I think the greatest weapon that I can contribute is trans joy in comedy and talking about hard subjects and really intricate moments of a transition, and try to let everybody in to see that I’m not a monster,” she said, adding to audience applause, “I’m not somebody that, you know, is trying to do anything but be myself and be happy.”
Asked where she draws strength from, Mulvaney replied, “Well, I think, having my chosen family and the people that I love to take care of me, but I also think there’s something just about making sure that you don’t put something out there before you’re ready, and really just surround yourself with good people.”
