President Biden Calls Out House Republicans Over ‘Baseless Impeachment’ of Mayorkas
Homeland Security secretary had never been credibly accused of any wrongdoing
President Biden denounced the House Republicans’ impeachment of one of members of his Cabinet as “baseless.”
House Republicans voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas Tuesday despite Mayorkas never having been credibly accused of any wrongdoing.
The vote to impeach Mayorkas was along the barest of lines, 214-213. Three Republicans joined all Democrats to oppose the move.
The move to impeach Mayorkas came just after Republicans abandoned the tough border security legislation they had previously demanded, doing so at the behest of Donald Trump.
Biden condemned the Mayorkas impeachment on social media Wednesday.
“History will not look kindly on House Republicans for their baseless impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas,” Biden posted. “Instead of staging political stunts like this, House Republicans with genuine concerns about the border should want Congress to deliver more border security.”
