Prominent Republican Retired Federal Judge Endorses Harris for President
Luttig has been a fierce critic of Donald Trump
A prominent conservative retired federal judge known in recent years for opposing Donald Trump’s assault on US democracy is backing Vice President Kamala Harris for president.
J Michael Luttig, 70, was appointed to the federal bench by President George HW Bush in 1991 after serving stints in the administrations of Bush and his predecessor, Ronald Reagan. Luttig also clerked for one of the most right-wing justices on the the US Supreme Court, the late Antonin Scalia.
However, in the last several years Luttig has been outspoken in print and on television opposing Trump’s election denialism and his bent for authoritarianism. He has frequently been a guest of left-leaning hosts on the MSNBC network, for instance.
Luttig made his opposition to Trump complete Monday by publicly endorsing the Democratic ticket for the White House.
“In the presidential election of 2024 there is only one political party and one candidate for the presidency that can claim the mantle of defender and protector of America’s Democracy, the Constitution, and the Rule of Law. As a result, I will unhesitatingly vote for the Democratic Party’s candidate for the Presidency of the United States, Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris,” Luttig said.
“Because of the former president’s continued, knowingly false claims that he won the 2020 election, millions of Americans no longer have faith and confidence in our national elections, and many never will again,” Luttig added. “Many Americans – especially young Americans, tragically – have even begun to question whether constitutional democracy is the best form of self-government for America.”
Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov Tim Walz, have been picking up significant support from Republicans disaffected by Trump’s authoritarianism and criminal history.
That includes such former congressmen as Adam Kinzinger and Joe Walsh, as well as the incumbent mayor of Mesa, Ariz, John Giles.
The Democratic campaign has set up an outreach arm known as “Republicans for Harris.”
