Psaki: ‘Not Getting Voting Rights Done Is Not an Option’
Attitude within administration changes after apparent disinterest
When it comes to the fundamental issue of voting rights at the Biden White House, if you don't like what the administration has to say, apparently the watchword is: Wait a minute.
After causing a political firestorm earlier last week when journalist Peter Nicholas reported some political ambivalence on the issue which many on the left consider the key issue among all others, White House press secretary Jen Psaki rounded out the week by once again putting President Biden and the administration strongly behind the fight against Republican efforts to enact state-level laws to restrict voting rights.
With protesters gathered outside of the White House, Nicholas tweeted a quote from an unnamed White House official verbally shrugging shoulders at the affair, by saying, “Every constituency has their issue. If you ask immigration folks, they’ll tell you their issue is a life-or-death issue too.”
But by Friday, Psaki was on offense against Republicans at her podium in the White House briefing room.
Senate Democrats have tried — and failed — several times now to pass federal legislation to secure voting rights, having been blocked each time by Republicans.
“When a hand has been extended by Democrats to work together to protect the fundamental right, Republicans have not only recoiled, they have blocked the ability to make any semblance of progress,” she said. “So, what the president's referring to is the fact that that is unacceptable. The protection of the fundamental right to vote is something that has been bipartisan in the past.
“He spoke back in March about about his concerns, or how he would view it if the Republicans continue to be obstructionist around it, and we’ve seen that time and time again. So, he will discuss what that looks like, because not getting voting rights done is not an option,” Psaki added.
