‘Rashida Is A Friend of Mine’: Bernie Sanders Defends Rep Tlaib
Senator and two-time presidential candidate aids embattled Democratic congresswoman
Bernie Sanders, the prominent progressive independent senator and former presidential hopeful, is coming to the aid of an embattled Democratic congresswoman who was recently the target of an attempt to censure her in the House.
Sanders, the longtime lawmaker from Vermont who sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016 and 2020, is defending Rep Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich), who has come under fire for her positions relative to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Tlaib’s claimed that President Biden is supporting the “genocide” against Palestinians amid the ongoing war between Israel and the militant group Hamas.
Nearly 10,000 Palestinians — including thousands of children — have been killed since the Israeli retaliation began after the October 7 Hamas attacks.
Tlaib, the only Palestinian-American in Congress, was recently the subject of an attempt to censure her by far-right congresswoman, Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga). That attempt failed when no Democrats voted for the resolution and nearly two dozen Republicans voted against it, as well.
“Rashida is a friend of mine. Her family comes from Palestine, I think she has been shaken, as all of us are, about what’s going on right there, right now,” said Sanders. “We have to address the humanitarian crisis. But if anyone thinks that [Donald] Trump is going to be better than Biden on this issue, or any other issue for that matter, I think they are sorely mistaken.”
