Reaping What They Sowed: Far-right White Nationalist Begs MAGA Voters To Keep Voting
The "Big Lie" about 2020 is convincing right-wingers there's no point in showing up to vote
Republicans and others on the political right are now having to contend with problems of their own making which threaten to suppress their own vote.
Charlie Kirk, a broadcaster, well-known white nationalist and activist on the far right, was caught on video Friday trying to convince MAGA supporters to keep voting — even after Donald Trump and others on the right insist falsely that the 2020 presidential election was “rigged.”
Trump and many others on the right continue to lie and claim that the 2020 election was marred by widespread fraud which “stole” the election away from Trump.
Perpetuating that lie relentlessly for more than two years has had the perverse effect that Trump supporters and other MAGA voters are getting turned off, reluctant to continue to cast ballots in further elections which they now see as unfair.
Kirk, speaking Friday at a gathering of his Turning Point USA group, was left trying to convince those voters not to stay away from the polls despite the lies of fraud.
He has to play a balancing act: not actually admit the truth but at the same time realize that the true result of MAGA Voter antipathy will only further lock those like him on the far-right out of power.
Here's an excerpt of Kirk's tortured conversation with the MAGA crowd during a Q&A session:
VOTER: “Yes, the 2020 election was rigged. It was stolen. It was. Yes. No, it was stolen. Right. And I want to thank you for standing up for that. And that’s why when — when the 2022 elections came around, I told all of my friends and family, I said, there’s only one way to stop this woke Democrat mafia, and that is to boycott these elections because they’re never going to hear us if we don’t really stop from participating in their lie. It’s a farce. It’s a farce. And why should we participate? You said it yourself. Why should we participate?”
KIRK: “No, no, no. Let me tell you why. So I love the energy. You buttered me up perfectly, right? But I got to disagree. It is not rational to stop engaging in the civic process that decides who is in charge.”
VOTER 2: “But, it’s rigged!”
KIRK: “Hold on. Just one second, even if it is rigged. Okay. Even if it is rigged, going through a tradition of voting at least opens an opportunity, a chance, a micron that you actually might still be able to have representative government. What you are doing, respectfully, is a guarantee that you’ll never have a voice.”
