Rep. Cheney Calls Out GOP Colleague Cawthorn for Using Language ‘That Seems Intended to Incite Violence’
Wyoming Republican looks for Kevin McCarthy to take a stand
Rep Liz Cheney — the Wyoming Republican who's been booted from House GOP leadership for refusing to spread the lie that Donald Trump won the 2020 presidential election, and signed on against her leadership's wishes to serve on the select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol insurrection — has once again taken on wrongdoing in her own party.
Cheney is condemning recent remarks by Republican Rep. Madison Cawthorn, of North Carolina, in which Cawthorn told his local Macon County Republican Party “that elections in the United States are 'rigged' and said there will be 'bloodshed' if the country's electoral system continues on its current path.”
After holding a shotgun Cawthorn said, “I will tell you, as much as I am willing to defend our liberty at all costs, there is nothing that I would dread doing more than having to pick up arms against a fellow American. And the way that we can have recourse against that is if we all passionately demand that we have election security in all 50 states.”
After urging President Biden's Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment, to remove him from office, Cawthorn promised, “I will remove Joe Biden from office, and then, when Kamala Harris inevitably screws up, we will take them down, one at a time.”
He also called those arrested in the January 6 insurrection, which he helped incite, “political prisoners” and “political hostages.”
Cheney called on House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif), with whom she's tangled both over Trump's “Big Lie” and her service on the January 6 select committee, to condemn Cawthorn's violent rhetoric.
“Listen, I think Representative Cawthorn is using language that seems intended to incite violence, and -- and every member ought to condemn that. And I'd like to see Leader McCarthy very clearly condemn it and explain how dangerous that is,” Cheney said.
