Rep. Spanberger Says Americans Are Absolutely ‘Investing’ Money in Ukraine
Ukrainian President addressed US Congress this week as American lawmakers approved new aid to the country fighting Russia
The American people should be proud of the support their government is providing Ukraine in Ukraine's struggle against Russian incursion and barbarity, according to a Democratic congresswoman and former CIA officer.
Rep Abigail Spanberger's comments come just days after Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky's whirlwind visit to Washington DC capped off with an electric — and potentially historic — speech before the US Congress.
And also as lawmakers wrapped up work on a massive federal funding package which includes about $45 billion in new assistance to Ukraine to support its war effort to resist Russian leader Vladimir Putin's lawless and barbaric invasion which began in February.
In that dramatic address to a joint meeting of Congress on Wednesday night, Zelensky told lawmakers that the aid was not charity, but an investment in global security and democracy.
“This money is absolutely an investment that the American people are making in supporting our Ukrainian allies, but also in supporting the cause of democracy throughout the world,” said Spanberger (D-Va), who gathered intelligence about nuclear proliferation and terrorism during her CIA career. “I think it’s important to remember that while we are making substantial investments in Ukraine, we are also leading the way for our allies throughout the world to do the same.
“We are not alone in providing substantial support, and we have led our partners and allies in the provision of aid, be it lethal aid, humanitarian aid, and also in sanctioning Russian oligarchs and those who are behind and supporting this horrific invasion and war in Ukraine,” Spanberger added, speaking in an on-camera appearance on CNN. “So, I am proud to support this additional provision of aid. It is vitally important that we continue to support the people of Ukraine as they fight for their own democracy and the cause of democracy worldwide.”
