Republican Battle: Trump Brawls with Haley Coming Out of New Hampshire
Former president lashes out Tuesday night in bizarre speech
Although Donald Trump won New Hampshire’s Republican primary, his sole remaining rival for the 2024 presidential nomination refused to step aside.
The former president’s victory was not a magnanimous one, unleashing outlandish vitriol against his opponent, his own one-time ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley.
Trump won Tuesday’s primary with 54.5 percent of the vote, while Haley received 43.2 percent in her second-place finish.
His comfortable margin of victory did nothing to mollify Trump, however, as he attacked Haley and her chief supporter and surrogate — New Hampshire Gov Chris Sununu (R) — in a frankly bizarre speech.
The former president inexplicably referred to Sununu as “hopscotch.”
“This is not your typical victory speech, but let’s not have somebody take a victory when she had a very bad night. She had a very bad night,” Trump said of Haley. “And you have the now very unpopular governor of the state. This guy, he's got to be on something. I’ve never seen anybody with energy —
“He’s like hopscotch. You know, I’m watching this guy and two weeks ago said, ‘We are going to win, we are going to win in a landslide.’ About three days ago he said, ‘Well, we want to do well.’ That’s a big difference,” Trump added. “But I walked out, we're 14 points up, and I don’t know what it’s going to be. But when she was up here, it was like 6 or 7 and with like 7 percent of the vote counted.”
In perhaps an even more-bizarre turn, the Republican frontrunner warned Haley — and former opponent, Florida Gov Ron DeSantis —that they could be investigated by Democrats if either won. DeSantis exited the race after a weak second-place finish in Iowa.
“And just a little note to Nikki. She’s not going to win, but if she did, she would be under investigation by those people in 15 minutes. And I could tell you five reasons why already,” Trump said. “Not big reasons, little stuff that she doesn’t want to talk about, but she will be under investigation within minutes, and so would Ron have been, but he decided to get out. He decided to get out.”
