Republican Congressman Calls for Political Reform by Use of ‘Force’
Gaetz's remarks come just days after incident involving alleged threats made against Biden
A prominent right-wing Republican congressman from Florida expressly advocated the use of force in achieving political goals Saturday.
Rep Matt Gaetz spoke by Donald Trump's side, at a political event in Iowa, which is the site of the first contest for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
Making his third bid for the White House, Trump's presently the frontrunner to win the nomination to challenge President Biden next year.
A representative from Northwest Florida, Gaetz was in the Hawkeye State to pump up a crowd of Trump supporters at the Iowa State Fair.
“Mr. President, I cannot stand these people that are destroying our country. They are opening our borders. They are weaponizing our federal law enforcement against patriotic Americans who love this nation as we should. We are having a great time at the fair. We love standing with you,” said Gaetz, in office since 2017. “But we know that only through force do we make any change in a corrupt town like Washington, DC.”
Gaetz made his remarks just days after a Utah man was fatally shot by the FBI .
Authorities said he pointed his weapon at agents and did not respond to their commands when they attempted to execute a search warrant following allegations that the man made threats against President Biden, saying he would need to prepare his camouflage and sniper rifle for Biden's recent visit to Utah. He also openly plotted online the assassination of Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, whose office is prosecuting Trump.
