Marjorie Taylor Greene Deems Pride Flag ‘A Symbol of Aggression’
Far-right congresswoman ignores much of the oppression LGBTQ Americans still face
A hard-right member of Congress chose the month in which the LGBTQ community celebrates Pride to take aim at the rainbow flag which represents that pride.
Republican Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia on Monday attacked the Pride flag as a “symbol of aggression,” while falsely claiming that LGBTQ Americans have full access to rights.
Pride is celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising which is acknowledged as the beginning of the modern struggle for LGBTQ rights.
Greene, a far-right congresswoman known for supporting bizarre conspiracy theories like Jewish-owned lasers in outer space, attacked the symbol of Pride — the well-known rainbow flag — in an appearance at a gathering of the organization run by far-right propagandist and white supremacist Charlie Kirk.
“Absolutely, I called them out because the Pride movement is not about rights for gay people anymore, that’s been totally determined for a very long time. Every single American has equal rights, Greene said falsely. “The equal right to vote, the equal right to buy a home, to have a job if they qualify for job qualifications, get an education, and so much more in America.”
What Greene didn't say is that LGBTQ Americans still face discrimination in public accommodations in many states, and that they are increasingly under attack by the growing wave of anti-LGBTQ laws in Republican-led states, such as well-known “Don't Say Gay” legislation in Florida.
“But that flag that you’re showing there, that the White House and Joe Biden prominently displays as more important that the United States American flag, has become a symbol of aggression,” Greene continued. “It’s an aggression in a type of form that should be concerning to all Americans, and it is to most Americans.”
