Republican DeSantis Rejects Call To Send Florida Guard to Biden's SOTU
Governor seen as likely 2024 presidential hopeful
When President Biden delivers his first State of the Union address before Congress Tuesday evening, he won't have the Florida National Guard to help protect him.
Florida Gov Ron DeSantis, a Republican who has been jousting for months with Biden over handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, said that he rejected a request to send Florida National Guard troops to Washington DC to help with security at the Capitol Building.
“Last week, the Biden Administration requested the assistance of State National Guards to deploy to Washington DC. I have rejected this request — there will be no @FLGuard sent to DC for Biden's State of the Union,” DeSantis tweeted.
DeSantis is seeking reelection as governor this year. Then he is likely seen as a contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
Although Biden addressed Congress last year, it was not an official State of the Union speech.
