'Republican Governors Are Creating Their Own Private Army'
26 state governors create "Border Strike Force"
All but two of the nation's Republican governors have signed on to create a shadow standing army, immediately targeting the so-called “crisis” at the southern border.
The formation of this “Border Strike Force” raises further immediate questions on federalism and just who can essentially raise an army in the United States, and very well test the role of president as the ultimate commander-in-chief of the American military.
Led by Texas Republican Gov Greg Abbott, more than two dozen US governor's are backing this new, so-called “Strike Force.”
Governors will lend National Guard troops to the effort, which supposedly will operate in border locations in Arizona and Texas.
Abbott and other Republicans — including governors — have been trying to embarrass President Biden for more than a year over a so-called “crisis” at the border.
“Border security has always been a federal responsibility until the Biden Administration. I'm proud to join my fellow governors in launching the American Governors' Border Strike Force. States are stepping up to secure the border in the federal government's absence,” tweeted Abbott, who is a potential contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
This new “Strike Force” is not Abbott’s first attempt at a state-led border response. He launched his “Operation Lone Star” last year within Texas state lines, using state resources to operate border interdiction.
That effort, however, ran afoul of the courts.
Democratic-aligned influencers and analysts raised serious questions about this new multi-state effort, as well.
“Republican Governors are creating their own private army. Today the border. Tomorrow?” tweeted influencer and attorney Ron Filipkowski.
“Republican governors across multiple states creating a ‘Border Strike Force' to address a nonexistent border crisis they’re trying to blame on Biden is the worst kind of proto-fascist political theater. The national guard does not exist for this,” commented podcaster Andrew Wortman.
Abbott's been pulling a political stunt of sending busloads of undocumented immigrants to Washington DC.
An eighth bus is headed for the nation’s capital, as of Tuesday.
There have been other Republican efforts aimed at interfering with Biden's top authority as commander-in-chief.
There have been efforts led by Gov Kevin Stitt to countermand Biden's directive that all US military personnel should be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Also, Florida Gov Ron DeSantis — another likely 2024 hopeful — took the unusual step of declining a request in February to send Florida National Guard troops to help secure Biden's State of the Union address.
