Republican Right Signals Exactly Where It's Headed Next After Roe v Wade
With abortion rights about to fall, right-wingers take aim at access to birth control
With the national right to abortion services nationally about to fall at the Supreme Court, the political right is already signaling where they want to go next in a roll-back of civil rights.
Republican Senate candidate Blake Masters, of Arizona, reportedly said if elected he will vote against judges unless they commit to overturning the 1965 Griswold v. Connecticut decision which ended laws that banned contraception.
“The case helped establish the basic right to privacy,” Democratic podcaster and YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen tweeted Sunday.
The national right to abortion services has been in doubt since Politico last week published a leaked draft decision penned by Justice Samuel Alito, which would — if made final — entirely overturn Roe v Wade, the seminal 1973 Supreme Court decision which has provided for legal abortions for nearly 50 years.
Now that right-wingers appear on the cusp of realizing a major political goal, the statement by Masters would seem to demonstrate where their next target in their assault on women's rights lies.
Masters is just one in a crowded field of Republican hopefuls seeking their party's nomination to take on incumbent Democratic Sen Mark Kelly in the November midterm elections.
Arizona's primary is August 2.
The position apparently taken by Masters has been received with more outrage and scorn from women still reeling from the very real possibility that one of their cornerstone civil liberties is about to be pulled out from under them.
“Arizona GOP Senate candidate wants to allow states to ban contraception use. Oh yes, do tell us more about how we’re just being hysterical when we raise concerns that Griswold v. Connecticut could be on the chopping block with this Supreme Court,” tweeted Miranda Yaver, who identifies herself as a political science professor at Oberlin College, a liberal arts college in Ohio.
