Republican Senate Candidate Longtime Trump Critic -- But Won’t Back Harris
Hogan refuses to join others crossing party lines to vote for the vice president this year
Republican Larry Hogan developed a real reputation as a persistent critic of Donald Trump during his eight years as governor of Maryland.
Now that he’s running an uphill battle for US Senate, that’s no different.
But unlike so many of his fellow Republicans who are crossing party lines to actively back Vice President Kamala Harris for president, Hogan steadfastly refuses to endorse her over Trump.
Regularly battling Trump during his two terms as governor, Hogan has continued to incur the wrath of the former president and Trump’s inner circle.
After Hogan told Americans to “to respect the verdict and the legal process” just before Trump was convicted in New York earlier this year on dozens of felony counts, a top Trump campaign manager tore into Hogan on social media, saying “You just ended your campaign.”
Just Sunday, Hogan was interviewed on national TV and condemned “the toxic and divisive politics” Trump is known for.
However, he refused to back Harris as the clear alternative to Trump — even as Hogan runs for Senate against Democrat Angela Alsobrooks in deep-blue Maryland.
He is running to succeed retiring Democratic Sen Ben Cardin and become the first Republican Maryland has elected to the US Senate in decades.
And yet Hogan is resisting the step dozens of other prominent Republicans — including former vice president Dick Cheney and the incumbent mayor of Mesa, Ariz — have taken and announce publicly that they are crossing party lines to vote for Harris as the nation’s 47th president.
Despite saying, “I’m willing to put country over party,” Hogan added: “Well, look, I’ve said neither one of the two candidates has earned my vote.”
