Republicans Pushing People ‘Into the Arms of the Democratic Party,’ Columnist Says
Whether it's abortion, LGBTQ rights or democracy, voters are getting motivated, Rubin says
Republicans — and the extreme positions they're taking on abortion and LGBTQ rights, and other issues — are only serving to alienate voters and push them “into the arms of the Democratic Party,” according to a well-known columnist for the Washington Post.
Specifically, columnist Jennifer Rubin called out Florida's Republican governor, Ron DeSantis for such actions as those he's taken to restrict the rights of gay, lesbian, transgender and others in Florida, including his late-night signing of a bill to ban abortions in the state beyond six weeks.
Rubin also highlighted the election earlier this month by voters in Wisconsin to elect the more-progressive candidate for the state Supreme Court after that left-leaning candidate spoke out for abortion and other rights.
“I think they are making these people serious, involved Democratic activists,” Rubin said of Republicans. “They are pushing them into the arms of the Democratic Party. Look at what happened in Wisconsin. It was a state Supreme Court race — not exactly barn-burner most years — but in this case there was a huge turnout. Young people turned out, independents, women, and they elected a progressive judge who promised to reinstate the pro-choice regime that was in place for years in Wisconsin.
“So I think these stances are hugely unpopular and just today, or perhaps it was the other day, [Republican New Hampshire Gov] Chris Sununu says, ‘If you are talking about a nationwide abortion ban, you are talking about an unelected candidate,” Rubin added, apparently referring to anti-abortion judges. “He is exactly right. It is not just older women, as you point out, who remember a pre-Roe America, it is women, and it is younger women.
“And these things combine together. It's not only guns and democracy, but race,” Rubin said. “When you see Governor DeSantis trying to silence dissent on LGBTQ+ rights, for example, these are democracy and LGBTQ+ rights. So I think these things combined, we are now seeing very large turnout among young voters.”
