Republicans Relentlessly Mocked for Outbursts at Hunter Biden
President's son makes surprise appearance at House Oversight hearing
Republicans on the House Oversight Committee were persistently derided for their outbursts when Hunter Biden made a surprise appearance during a congressional hearing focused on him.
Democrats, and even late-night comedians, made fun of Reps Nancy Mace, of South Carolina, and Marjorie Taylor Greene, of Georgia, for the Republicans’ behavior when the president’s son showed up briefly in the audience at a hearing of the House Oversight Committee Wednesday.
The committee met to consider voting Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for failing to adhere to their subpoena to testify.
The panel wants the younger Biden to testify as part of the baseless impeachment inquiry House Republicans have launched against his father.
Hunter Biden's appearance Wednesday apparently was a demonstration of his willingness to testify in public but Republicans want to speak with him only behind closed doors.
Mace became enraged at Hunter Biden's presence at the hearing, shouting, “First of all, my first question is who bribed Hunter Biden to be here today? That’s my first question. Second question, you are the epitome of white privilege, coming into the Oversight Committee, spitting in our face ignoring a congressional subpoena to be deposed. What are you afraid of? You have no balls to come up here and —”
After a time, as Biden was departing the hearing room, Greene also blew up at him: “Excuse me, Hunter, apparently you’re afraid of my words,” and added, “I think it’s clear and obvious, for everyone watching this hearing today, that Hunter Biden is terrified of strong, conservative Republican women, because he can’t even face my words as I was about to speak to him. What a coward!”
But it was the Republicans — not Hunter Biden — who became objects of scorn for their actions during the hearing.
Most immediately, by Democrats in the hearing.
“I just can't get over the gentlelady from South Carolina talking about white privilege,” Rep Jasmine Crockett said. “It was a spit in the face, at least of mine as a Black woman, for you to talk about what white privilege looks like, especially from that side of the aisle.”
“Ya’ll don’t know what white privilege looks like,” Crockett, of Texas, added.
Rep Jamie Raskin, of Maryland, couldn’t resist a jab at Greene for sharing Biden’s nude photos. Greene asked to enter evidence into the record, and Raskin objected due to the fact that Democrats had not received advance copies of Greene’s information.
“In the past, she’s displayed pornography. Are pornographic photos allowed to be displayed in this committee room?” Raskin asked.
When Greene said it wasn’t pornography, Raskin clapped back, “OK, well, you’re the expert.”
But the scorn didn't end there.
Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel recounted the day’s events later in his monologue, particularly Greene’s attempts to use nude photos of Hunter Biden.
“Thinking about it, kids today have no idea how lucky they are. When I was in high school, we never had [bleep] pics on C-SPAN. We had to go to the streets,” Kimmel said, to audience applause. “And that’s when the ranking Democrat on the Oversight Committee, Jamie Raskin, came in to kick some ass-kin.”
