Republicans Win Another Battle: Biden's Nominee Torpedoed
“... Unfortunately, from the very beginning of her nomination, Saule was subjected to inappropriate personal attacks that were far beyond the pale,” President Biden says
Determined Republicans won another small battle Tuesday, forcing the withdrawal of a Biden nominee after painting her as a dangerous communist.
The fight began last month as Senate Republicans savaged Saule Omarova, President Biden's pick to be comptroller of the currency.
The tone of the right-wing attack was clear when Republican Sen John Kennedy of Louisiana declared, “I don’t know whether to call you professor or comrade.”
Omarova, 55, was born in Soviet-era Kazakhstan but has lived in the United States for some 30 years.
She's developed a career as a law professor, academic, and public policy advisor. Although she was painted as a communist, Omarova previously worked in Republican President George W Bush’s administration.
Omarova was defended by those across the spectrum.
But the fight over the nomination ended Tuesday when Biden accepted Omarova's request to have her name withdrawn.
“Saule would have brought invaluable insight and perspective to our important work on behalf of the American people. But unfortunately, from the very beginning of her nomination, Saule was subjected to inappropriate personal attacks that were far beyond the pale,” Biden said in a statement.
