Right-wing Rally Fizzles As Press Appears Desperate For Something To Cover
Crowd size estimated at a paltry 400 or so
After the nation's capital prepared for a potential second try at a large-scale insurrection Saturday modeled after that which occurred on January 6, the reality was far less fearsome and dangerous.
The event assembled in Washington DC ostensibly to support those domestic terrorists who found themselves arrested, and in a growing number of cases, are finding themselves sentenced to sizable prison terms in connection with their participation with the January 6 insurrection.
Those on the right are trying to portray those extremists who have been arrested and are in the midst of being tried for their involvement in the Capitol riot as “political prisoners.”
The crowd was estimated by journalists and other neutral observers present at no more than a meager 450.
It was a far cry from the thousands of extremist supporters of Donald Trump who rioted January 6 and stormed the US Capitol Building in an attempt to overturn the legitimate and lawful certification of Joe Biden as the next president of the United States.
Nevertheless, Capitol Police, which made sure that they would be much better prepared for Saturday's event than they were on January 6, took into custody a man deemed a security threat.
The organizer of the Saturday event, Matt Brainard, expressed displeasure with Republican members of Congress for being no-shows at the “rally.”
HuffPost Senior Editor Andy Campbell was one of those observers present who noted that reporters, too, seemed over-prepared.
“The rally in DC today was just 60 reporters standing in an empty field, tweeting about how grumpy they were to see all the other reporters,” he tweeted.
This left journalists straining to find something — anything — newsworthy to cover.
“Give me a damn break. Two people arguing at the DC protest surrounded by dozens of media. I don’t think this is going to be a proud day for journalism in America,” said attorney Ron Filipkowski.
