Right-wingers Lose Their Minds as Easter Converges With Trans Day of Visibility
TDOV has been observed on March 31 since 2009
At least you can't say the political right isn't entirely predictable.
Right-wingers in media and politics are ginning up fresh outrage over the entirely coincidental fact that the Christian celebration of Easter this year happens to fall on the established observance of Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV) in the transgender community.
More to the point, of course, these figures on the right are scandalized because President Biden issued a proclamation in honor of TDOV.
Right-wingers lit up social media with resentment that surprises no one.
Such was the case with Rep Elise Stefanik, of New York, the third-highest ranking Republican in the House.
“Joe Biden declares that Easter Sunday is transgender visibility day while he bans Christian symbols from the White House Easter egg roll,” she posted. “Disgraceful. Easter will forever be the celebration of Jesus Christ’s resurrection.”
Other prominent Republican politicians, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene, of Georgia, posted similar sentiments.
Lee Cohen, who identifies as a contributor to a variety of right-wing media, also got in the act.
“Disturbing. @JoeBiden is our most lamentable catastrophic disgraceful President ever. #Biden #TransDayOfVisibility” he posted.
However, a variety of others on social media pushed back on the right-wing narrative, noting that Easter is a “movable feast” on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring equinox. Trans Day of Visibility, however, has been set on March 31 every year since 2009.
Someone who goes by Dr Karl Rutlidge posted a uniquely unifying perspective.
“I'm a Christian minister and a trans person. I shall celebrate both Easter Sunday and Trans Day of Visibility tomorrow,” he wrote. “Both are about the fact that love wins, even in the face of the worst we can throw at it.”
