A humorous new video from President Biden's reelection campaign seems to be causing many on the political right to become triggered and lose their minds.
The video — which combines a clever way to promote some campaign merchandise while also allowing Biden to playfully embrace his “Dark Brandon” persona — is generating continued attention among right-wing media.
The clip features Biden, looking presidential in a blue suit, sitting at a table while taking a sip of coffee. After taking a satisfied slurp, the president puts the mug down and proclaims, “I like my coffee dark.”
It ends with a closeup of the mug, which features a picture of Biden as his cooler, laser-eyed internet alter ego, “Dark Brandon.”
“Dark Brandon” became a meme of sorts popularized by Sen Chris Murphy, of Connecticut, and other Democrats, to celebrate an unexpectedly strong stream of legislative and political wins for the president.
The idea being to co-opt the right's anti-Biden slogan, “Let's go, Brandon,” and portray the president as an unlikely political superhero.
Those on the right, predictably, aren't playing along.
But once again while they are simultaneously trying — without any evidence — to portray the president as the head of the “Biden crime family,” they can't let go of their picture of him as doddering old man, suffering from dementia.
“This mug is, like, about trying to present him as tough and badass when we know he probably wears diapers and he falls off his bike,” said Rachel Campos-Duffy, a personality at the right-wing Fox News.
And right-wing media clip service Grabien labeled the clearly pre-planned humorous video some sinister attempt by Biden to “gloat” Thursday, the day that Donald Trump was arraigned in federal court on new criminal charges in Washington DC.
And Fox News personality and one-time Trump White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany tried to falsely declare the mugs a campaign failure within 24 hours of the video
“But real concerns in Biden Land. Emily, look at this. Politico: ‘Because small donors are a proxy for enthusiasm, if people aren’t concerned about the drop-off in contributions to the Biden campaign, then they just aren’t paying attention or whistling past the graveyard.’ So, apparently, the Dark Brandon mugs aren’t working. They go on to say this, this is a quote: ‘The impact is from top to bottom. You can see in the ActBlue numbers,’ — ActBlue is the Democrat fundraising platform and they saw a drop-off in $30 million in small donor donations. ‘You can see it from the DNC down through every group. There has to be a quick examination among Democrats about what is creating this enthusiasm gap.’ Of course, the small-dollar donations, an indication of your base. People aren’t donating, not giving, they may not show up at the polls.”
Axios, however, reported different statistics: ‘Dark Brandon’ — an online meme that portrays the 80-year-old president as a two-steps-ahead Machiavelli — is driving the Biden campaign's merchandise sales. More than 54% of the store's total revenue is coming from Brandon-themed products, his re-election team told Axios.”
