RNC Chairwoman Tries To Distract From Declaration Of Attempted Coup, Capitol Riot As 'Legitimate Political Discourse'
Democrat O'Rourke uses party statement as issue in race for Texas governor
The chairwoman of the Republican Party is trying mightily to deflect attention from the latest skirmish in her party's ongoing civil war.
As well, Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel is attempting to divert interest away from a new, official Republican resolution which asserts that Donald Trump's attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election — and the subsequent January 6 attack on the US Capitol Building — were merely “legitimate political discourse.”
Meanwhile, the leading Democratic candidate running for Texas governor this year has taken to use that resolution as an issue in his campaign.
The RNC voted Friday to censure Republican Reps. Liz Cheney, of Wyoming, and Adam Kinzinger, of Illinois, for their participation in the committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol carried out by the supporters of then-President Donald Trump. In the process, it also attempted to reframe the events of that day as “legitimate political discourse.”
“Representatives Cheney and Kinzinger are participating in a Democrat-led persecution of ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse, and they are both utilizing their past professed political affiliation to mask Democrat abuse of prosecutorial power for partisan purposes,” the censure resolution stated.
That attempt to essentially normalize Trump's attempt to secure an illegal second term — as well as the deadly riot at the Capitol — apparently is creating substantial blowback, given that McDaniel sent her members “talking points” on the Cheney and Kinzinger resolution, according to Washington Post reporter Josh Dawsey.
Her email says members were asking for them. In it, McDaniel encourages members to talk about the lawmakers working closely with Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as well as supposedly the committee “harassing” those not at the Capitol.
Among those slamming the GOP for calling direct attacks against American democracy “legitimate political discourse” are the organizations VoteVets and the pro-democracy and anti-Trump Republican group, The Lincoln Project.
“Hey, @GOP, was the Civil War also 'legitimate political discourse’?” VoteVets asked in a post which the Lincoln Project subsequently retweeted.
Democrat Beto O'Rourke has begun using the matter as an issue in his campaign against incumbent Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.
“5 officers died because of the Jan 6 attack. More were injured with crushed cervical discs, broken ribs & traumatic brain injuries. It was an assault on law enforcement, on law and order. We deserve to know whether @GregAbbott_TX thinks this was “legitimate political discourse,” tweeted O’Rourke, who is leading a field of Democrats vying for the nomination to take on Abbott in November.
