Russian Gymnast Condemned for Wearing New "Z" Pro-Putin Symbol
A Russian gymnast was denounced by the international organization which oversees his sport because of his choice to wear a “Z,” which has quickly become a symbol for Russians who support autocratic leader Vladimir Putin and his lawless invasion of Ukraine.
The International Gymnastics Federation condemned Russian gymnast Ivan Kuliak for wearing the “Z” on his chest in support of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Kuliak, who won bronze at the gymnastics World Cup event, eventually stood next to Ukrainian gold medalist Illia Kovtun.
The “Z” symbol has quickly begun spreading among Russians.
Some interpret “Z” as “Za pobedy” (for victory). Others, as “Zapad” (West).
Russian military have been having it emblazoned on the vehicles they're riding into battle in sovereign, democratic Ukraine.
It's also begun popping up on business vehicles, on Russian passenger cars and — like Kuliak — on articles of clothing.
The symbol has been part of an intense, fascistic propaganda effort undertaken by Putin and his government in Moscow.
