Schiff: We Will Go After Anyone Who Doesn’t Provide Information to Jan. 6th Committee
Select committee to vote Tuesday to hold former Trump advisor Steve Bannon in contempt
Recalcitrant former staffers from Donald Trump's administration are about to learn first-hand that a new sheriff's in town.
After years of successfully dodging lawful congressional subpoenas during the Trump administration, former White House advisor Steve Bannon is on the verge of being held in contempt for refusing to appear before the House select committee investigating the events of January 6.
The select committee is scheduled to vote Tuesday to hold Bannon in contempt for failing to appear.
Bannon and his attorney are attempting to justify Bannon's absence by Trump's declaration of executive privilege. However, now that he is out of office, Trump's claims of privilege no longer carry the force of law.
“The process is that on Thursday night, we’ll be voting on a report in the committee. The report concludes that Bannon should be held in contempt. He failed to appear. He has no reasonable explanation for that failure to appear,” Rep Adam Schiff (D-Calif) said in an on-air interview with MSNBC host Jonathan Capehart. “And that will then go to the full House. The full House will vote to hold him in criminal contempt, and then the speaker will ultimately refer that contempt to the Justice Department, where the statute says that the Justice Department has a duty to present it to the grand jury.”
“So I just want to make sure that I heard you correctly that Tuesday isn’t the day, it’s Thursday?” Capehart tried to clarify.
“Tuesday. No, I’m sorry if I said — it’s Tuesday —” Schiff corrected.
“Okay,” Capehart interjected.
“ — that we’ll take up the report and will pass it out of the committee on Tuesday. I don’t know the date that we will take it up on the floor. We hope to take it up very soon. But we’re not messing around here,” Schiff added. “We’re moving very expeditiously. To me, this is an early sign of whether our democracy is recovering, whether it’s true that no one is above the law, that the rule of law must apply. So we intend to go after anyone who doesn’t provide information that they’re lawfully compelled to, to our committee.”
