‘Secret Slush Fund’: Settlement Will Enrich Trump And Allies, Congressman Says
Arrangement concludes Trump’s suit against his own IRS
Donald Trump’s suddenly dropping his lawsuit because a judge was about to shut it down, according to a Democratic congressman.
However, Trump will receive a $1.7 billion settlement will provide him with a “secret slush fund,” according to the congressman, Rep Dan Goldman, of New York.
The president sued the IRS in January after a contractor at the agency leaked his tax returns in 2019 and 2020. ABC News was first to report the new settlement Thursday.
Trump’s sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, are also suing. The IRS contractor who disclosed Trump’s taxes to the press was prosecuted and is serving a five-year prison sentence.
There’s much more to the story than meets the eye, according to Goldman, a former federal prosecutor who worked on Trump’s first impeachment before his election to Congress.
Goldman posted about it on social media.
“Judge was about to throw out the case [because] Trump controls both parties,” the congressman wrote. “Before it’s dismissed, Trump tells both parties to reach a ‘settlement.’
“Settlement shields Trump from any future audit and creates a secret slush fund that can dole out money to anyone with no transparency,” Goldman adds. “Mind-boggling corruption.”
Trump will pay off his political allies —including people involved with the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot — ABC News reported.
Goldman also had words for the Republican speaker of the House, Rep Mike Johnson, of Louisiana.
“@SpeakerJohnson - you may not know it, but your job is to conduct oversight of the admin. You can’t run away from this one.”
