Sen Amy Klobuchar Discloses Cancer Treatment
Minnesota Democrat underwent lumpectomy this spring
Sen Amy Klobuchar, the Minnesota Democrat who ran for her party's presidential nomination before throwing her support behind Joe Biden, revealed Thursday that she's been treated this year for early-stage breast cancer.
She described her diagnosis and treatment in a brief essay published on Medium.
Discovery of some calcifications during a routine mammogram led to a biopsy at Piper Breast Center in Minneapolis, and a Stage 1A breast cancer diagnosis, the senator wrote.
Following further testing, Klobuchar said that she returned to Mayo and had a lumpectomy on her right breast which involved the removal of the cancer.
“In May, I completed a course of radiation treatment, and after additional follow-up visits, it was determined in August that the treatment went well,” she wrote.
Klobuchar wrote that she realizes that people are busy juggling obligations of families and careers and that it's easy to put off routine medical tests.
“But I hope my experience is a reminder for everyone of the value of routine health checkups, exams, and follow-through. I am so fortunate to have caught the cancer at an early enough stage and to not need chemotherapy or other extensive treatments, which unfortunately is not the case for so many others,” she wrote.
