Sen Marco Rubio Calls House Marriage Bill 'Stupid Waste of Time'
Legislation would codify same-sex marriage in federal law
Florida's Republican senior senator said that he will vote against a bill approved Tuesday in the US House which would codify same-sex marriage into federal law.
Lawmakers took that step since the right-wing bloc on the US Supreme Court could decide to strike down marriage equality the same way that they recently overturned Roe v Wade and upended half a century of national abortion rights.
Justice Clarence Thomas suggested that Supreme Court decisions involving access to contraception and same-sex marriage should be reconsidered, as part of his concurring decision overturning Roe.
The Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality in 2015.
The House on Tuesday passed the Respect for Marriage Act, which would protect marriage equality by repealing the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and providing federal protections for same-sex and interracial couples.
The bill passed 267-157, with 47 Republicans joining every Democrat voting in favor of the bill.
Sen Marco Rubio is not onboard, however.
“Marco Rubio told me that he is a NO on House’s same-sex marriage bill, calling it a ‘stupid waste of time,’” Manu Raju, CNN's chief congressional correspondent, tweeted Wednesday.
Reaction to Rubio's opposition was often harsh.
“Apparently, marriage is a 'stupid waste of time' for @marcorubio,” responded MSNBC and Peacock host Katie Phang.
And Washington Post contributor Jennifer Rubin replied, “because he hates gays? because he doesn't like marriage? considering all the entirely idiotic things he sponsors this is rich...”
