Senator: There’s ‘Real Worrying’ Republicans Plan to Use Justice System to Target Trump’s Opponents
Republicans have amped up rhetoric since former president’s conviction
There’s “real worrying” that the rhetoric from Donald Trump and his allies about using the justice system to target his political opponents is not just bluster — but that he would follow through on those threats should he be elected in November.
That’s according to a prominent Democratic senator.
The presumptive Republican nominee for president this year, Trump and others on the political right have amped up their rhetoric about “retribution” and revenge by potentially jailing opponents after the former president was convicted of 34 felonies in New York last month.
Those threats are being taken seriously, according to Sen Chris Murphy, of Connecticut.
“The reality is that Republicans’ sort of brazen decision to endorse the justice system’s decision-making when it convicts a Democrat — like the president’s son — and decision to call this system rigged when it convicts a Republican — like the former president — is a real worrying advertisement from Republicans that they are planning to potentially use the justice system as a mechanism to target Trump’s political opponents,” Murphy said. “Listen, I accept the jury’s decision with respect to Hunter Biden. I accept the jury’s decision with respect to Donald Trump, but Republicans seem to only believe the justice system is working right when it convicts Democrats, and believe that it’s illegitimate when it convicts Republicans.
“And that to me is a signal that they may be very open to using the justice system as a political tool to persecute opponents if they get power again.”
President Biden’s adult son, Hunter, was convicted this week on federal gun charges.
