‘Sexism, Misogyny, Racism’ All Are Coming Kamala Harris’ Way
Republicans ramping up vicious attacks
Vice President Kamala Harris will face a fierce barrage of sexist, racist and misogynistic attacks as the Democrats’ new presumptive presidential nominee.
Indeed, those attacks already have started. Although Black Americans will not stand for them, according to at least one prominent Black political commentator.
Harris has been moving quickly to start new, unexpected bid for the White House since President Biden dropped out of the race for reelection.
That includes clinching enough support among delegates to the upcoming Democratic National Convention to officially secure the Democratic nomination, as well as her first visit to her new campaign headquarters since heading up the ticket.
Harris would be the nation’s first woman and first Black female president, and as such already has begun facing a number of ugly attacks from Republicans.
“We’ve been talking a little bit tonight about just what’s coming her way, which is sexism, misogyny, racism, a lot of this, and making fun of her laugh,” said Jen Psaki, who served as Biden’s White House press secretary before joining MSNBC. “I hope she never changes her laugh, by the way. I think it’s an authentic part of who she is.”
Republican Rep. Tim Burchett, of Tennessee, Monday tried to smear the vice president as “100 percent, she was a DEI hire,” using an acronym those on the right are trying to use as a slur.
Harris’s opponents on the political right even purposely mock her name.
“And I’ve heard from inside Republican circles and right-wing media that the hate campaign against Kamala Harris has begun, you will notice they purposefully pronounce her name wrong,” said MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski. “They say Ka-MAL-a, they do it all the time. It is on purpose. But the talk is to start that hate campaign and get it going and start it churning.”
Black voters won’t stand for these kinds of vicious attacks — and they will backfire, according to Van Jones, a Black political commentator on CNN who worked in the White House during the Obama administration.
“This is going to work out badly, because they‘ve worked very hard to attract black men into Republican Party, they worked very hard to attract Latin men into Republican Party, and they were ever getting a little bit of momentum there,” he said. “There are a lot of black men who are saying, ‘Democrats don‘t do anything for us and Biden‘s weak and...’ — the people, they‘re starting to look over there at the Republican Party. You start insulting Black women, you‘re going to see something you haven‘t seen before.
“Black men are not going to put up with that. I want to send out a warning as clear as I can. I was on a phone call with 20,000 Black men, the word ‘protect’ came up about 1,000 times: ‘Protect this sister. Protect this sister. We're going to protect,’” Jones added. “You‘re about to see something you haven‘t seen before.
“Look, people messed around with Hillary Clinton and said a bunch of mean stuff to her. Black men sat that out. We won‘t sit this out,” he said. “So I don‘t think that the Republican Party understands that all the work that they did trying to get us over there, two more days of this, it‘s going to be a problem."
