She Goes There: MTG References 9/11 Plane to Argue Biden Could Have Shot Down Balloon Earlier
Flight 93 was brought down in Pennsylvania in heroic act, to save the lives of others
Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene, a supporter of bizarre conspiracy theories involving 9/11, actually used one of the great acts of heroism from the September 11, 2001, attacks in an effort to score political points against President Biden.
Greene, the hard-right Georgia Republican who agreed with people who question whether 9/11 was an inside job, cited the downing of Flight 93 in a field outside of Shanksville, Pa., as a basis why Biden should have ordered the shootdown of a Chinese spy balloon earlier this month.
United Airlines Flight 93 was a domestic scheduled passenger flight that was hijacked by four al-Qaeda attackers aboard the plane on the morning of September 11, 2001, as part of the attacks that day. The plane eventually crashed in rural Pennsylvania following an attempt by the passengers and crew to regain control of the plane from the hijackers. All 44 people on board were killed.
It's widely thought that the hijackers planned to crash Flight 93 into the US Capitol Building in Washington DC, so the bravery of the people on the flight likely saved untold lives in the nation's capital.
The federal government created a national park on the crash site to commemorate the event.
However, Greene co-opted the Flight 93 story to try to blame the president for not ordering the destruction of the spy balloon while it was still over land. The US military had warned Biden of potential loss of civilian life if he did so, and the spy device was successfully shot down off the coast of South Carolina.
“It finally leaves the coast and then, oh, they shot it down. The excuses that were given on this were pathetic, absolutely pathetic. They told us, 'It was too risky.’ Oh, it was too risky to shoot down the Chinese spy balloon. Do you know what a bunch of bullshit that is?” Greene said in a speech Monday. “Yeah, they said, ‘It’s three school buses.’ Three school buses. Why?
“Okay, well, do you guys remember on 9/11 when an airplane crashed in Pennsylvania, a jetliner? Remember that? It didn’t kill anybody on the ground. Killed everyone on board, but it didn’t kill anyone on the ground,” Greene said. “So they want to tell all of us that it was too risky to take down that Chinese spy balloon over rural Idaho or Montana or any of these other states or Alaska? They’re liars. There — you can only see it two ways. Either they’re liars or they’re cowards or our president is sold out to China. Oh, you know what? I’ll go with all three. That’s where I’m at.”
