‘Speaker Hakeem Jeffries’: House Republican Worried Democrats Will Retake House Before the Election
Majority soon will tilt on a single vote
A Republican congresswoman is going public with worry over a scenario that ought to seem outlandish, but increasingly is entering the realm of real possibility.
Rep Claudia Tenney, of New York, is openly saying that her fellow Republicans could soon lose their already-tenuous grip on their House majority and unwillingly hand control to Democrats and the current House minority leader, Hakeem Jeffries, of New York.
House Republicans have been engulfed in chaos since they took control of the chamber last year. And their infighting and dissention since then only has cannibalized the tiny majority began with, even further.
When Rep Mike Gallagher (R-Wis) resigns, as he announced, in just a few weeks, Republicans will hold just a one-vote majority.
This has sent some Republicans to panic over the once-unthinkable notion that they might even lose their majority altogether in the coming weeks and months, surrendering the House even before the November elections.
If that happens, it would give Democrats control of the House and Senate in the run-up to the 2024 elections which will decide who runs both chambers, as well as who sits in the Oval Office.
“We could end up having a Speaker Hakeem Jeffries in the interim here while we’re waiting for special elections,” Tenney said, in an on-camera appearance on Fox News, criticizing Gallagher’s decision to leave before the end of his term.
