‘Speaker McCarthy Is Afraid of His Own Shadow’: Democrats Mock Republicans' Battle
Republicans continue unable to govern as even President Biden tweaks lawmakers
As he continues to struggle getting even his own Republican members to approve must-pass spending bills in order to avoid a pending shutdown of the federal government, Speaker Kevin McCarthy has kept House Democrats out of budget negotiations.
That's left Democrats on the sidelines to mock McCarthy and the internal strife engulfing Republicans on Capitol Hill.
Just days away from a government shutdown, McCarthy and Republicans remain unable to approve any of the nearly dozen spending bills required to fund federal operations.
Republican frustration has begun spilling out into the public, with McCarthy complaining to the press about other Republicans “that want to take it all down,” while his right-wing rival Rep Matt Gaetz (R-Fla) admitted that “we own that failure” to fund the government.
That's left House Democrats with little else to do but watch and trash-talk Republicans on the other side of the political aisle.
"It will be the most preventable shutdown in history. We have 300-plus votes right now to fund the government, to fund Ukraine, to provide disaster relief. But Speaker McCarthy is afraid of his own shadow,” said Rep Jake Auchincloss (D-Mass), referring to the House Republican rule that it requires just a single member to call for a vote to oust McCarthy from the speakership.
Auchincloss also noted that there would be more than enough votes to pass legislation on a bipartisan basis if Republicans only reached out and got Democrats involved.
“They are doing my job for me,” Jaime Harrison, chair of the Democratic National Committee cracked, about the dysfunction of House Republicans.
Even President Biden got into the act, tweaking Republicans on social media for going home at the end of the workweek with the clock continuing to tick.
“Last time there was a government shutdown, 800,000 Americans were furloughed or worked without pay. But enjoy your weekend,” the president quipped.
