Steve Bannon Indicted; No-show Mark Meadows May Be Next
“Good news for the rule of law, and the institution of Congress,” tweets Ryan Goodman, law professor, and former special counsel at the Defense Department
Steve Bannon, a one-time White House advisor to former president Donald Trump, has been indicted by a grand jury for refusing to cooperate with a lawful subpoena from the House select committee investigating the events of January 6.
Bannon's indictment could become a warning for another top former Trump staffer, Mark Meadows, who has become the latest to refuse to appear before the select committee investigating the events surrounding the deadly insurrection at the US Capitol Building.
“Good news for the rule of law, and the institution of Congress,” tweeted Ryan Goodman, law professor, former special counsel at the Defense Department and co-editor-in-chief of Just Security.
Filmmaker and journalist Steven Beschloss hopes that the Bannon indictment sends a powerful signal to others who would seek to defy congressional subpoenas.
“May this be a message to every other arrogant, Trump-fueled subpoena defiers,” he wrote.
Most immediately, that would be former Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, who like Bannon was a no-show before the select committee looking into the events surrounding violent extremist Trump supporters storming the US Capitol on January 6 in an attempt to overturn the lawful and legitimate certification of Joe Biden as the next president of the United States.
Attorney Ron Filipkowski said that he hopes that Bannon's indictment — and warrant issued for his arrest — vindicates Attorney General Merrick Garland, who has been a target for those critical of the Justice Department not moving strongly against wrongdoing by those on the political right.
“A toast to all three of us on twitter who never yelled and screamed and stomped our feet about Merrick Garland,” he said.
Journalist and podcaster Molly Jong-Fast noted that, with his indictment, Bannon is making history of a sort, as he is the first person to be charged with criminal contempt of Congress in 38 years.
