‘Such A Stark Difference’: Mark Cuban Touts Harris’ Economic Agenda
Celebrity billionaire also gives nominee cover for serving as vice president
Celebrity billionaire and TV personality Mark Cuban praised both Vice President Kamala Harris as a candidate for president as well as the economic policies she’s outlined thus far in the campaign.
Further, Cuban also provided Harris political cover, that as vice president under Joe Biden, Harris was not the one setting the political agenda for the last four years.
Known for his years appearing on the business-investment competition TV series, Shark Tank, Cuban was with Harris Wednesday as she gave a speech on her economics outlook in Pittsburgh Pa.
He spoke extensively with the news media after her address.
In particular, Cuban contrasted Harris and Trump on the US economy and other issues, including a widely held view that Trump had been good for the economy in his term as president.
“I mean, he’s a good salesperson. He talks a good game, but it doesn’t mean he follows through or gets the job done. That’s part of what she has to communicate. I think she got a good start in doing that and was able to communicate that with Carrier as an example,” Cuban said, referring to Harris mentioning Trump’s failed promises to bring jobs to the manufacturer. “Look, the starkest difference between the two, Donald Trump wants to threaten companies. We saw him threaten John Deere with a 200-percent tariff. That doesn’t do anything to make John Deere’s business better. In fact, it makes it easier for Chinese companies to compete with John Deere, even after a 10- or 20-percent tariff.
“What did Kamala Harris say? She said she’s going to incent companies to grow and build. She’s going to offer tax incentives, she’ll make it easier to borrow money, the things that companies need to grow. So one is a hammer and the other is a carrot, right? How do we help businesses grow? That’s such a stark difference,” Cuban added. “The other huge difference between the two, Donald is just so impetuous, he’s so impulsive in everything he says about policy. You can tell that the Kamala Harris team has vetted every single thing she said. Not just does it sound good, does it hold good, but, really, is it good, strong policy? When I talked to her, you know, the key message she gave to me was, ‘These are policies we’ve really thought hard about, that are important to me. We want to make them work.’”
Cuban also answered persistent criticism of Harris that she already had the opportunity to solve the nation’s problems as vice president, particularly issues at the southern border.
“Yeah, but Joe, you know there’s a lot of COOs that when the CEO leaves for whatever reason, come in, take over, and have completely different policies and approaches. Right? That’s just the way it works,” Cuban said, in an interview with CNBC host Joe Kernan. “When you’re second in command, you do what your boss tells you to do. He delegates authority to you.”
“But the border was supposed to be her,” Kernan countered.
“Yeah, but it’s still the same thing, it’s his policies,” Cuban said, referring to Biden. “What he said to her was, ‘You go down and you use diplomacy to try to improve — to try to reduce the flow, the migration of people across the border,’ right? And when they finally came around — and it took too long, I agree — but when they finally got there, now look at the results.
“It didn’t take a wall, but yet the crossing numbers are where Trump’s were pre-pandemic, they are the same numbers. So it worked. So what she did actually worked, right?” he added.
