Ted Cruz Defends The Nazi Salute
At issue is right-wing anger over the attorney general's order to investigate and prosecute intimidation against local school board members
Sen Ted Cruz, the Texas Republican who earlier this year led the attempt to prevent the lawful certification of Joe Biden as the next president of the United States just hours before extremists supporting Donald Trump stormed the Capitol Building on January 6, defended parents throwing Nazi salutes at school board meetings across the country Wednesday.
Cruz made his statement at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing at which Attorney General Merrick Garland was answering senators’ questions.
Cruz and others on the political right are angry over a memo Garland issued earlier this month directing the FBI and federal prosecutors to take on the rising violence and intimidation which right-wingers are increasingly directing at local school board members whom they disagree with — particularly on such matters as mask and vaccine mandates in schools.
This intimidation and violence, such as that experienced by Brevard County, Fla., school board member Jennifer Jenkins, exceeds the boundaries of the First Amendment.
