Texas Democrat Looks To Succeed Congresswoman Who's Been In Office 'Since The Year I Was Born'
“No one who works 40 hours a week should live in poverty,” Mason says
Texas Democrat Jessica Mason is running a primary campaign to succeed a congresswoman who's been in office since the year Mason was born.
Mason is running in the Texas 30th Congressional District, which has been represented by Rep Eddie-Bernice Johnson since she was first elected in 1992.
The district covers much of the city of Dallas and other parts of Dallas County.
“We’ve had the same representation since 1992, the year I was born. Yesterday’s solutions will not meet today’s unprecedented challenges. I’m running for Congress in #tx30 to bring fresh ideas and new leadership. #teamnewdeal,” Mason tweeted.
Mason said that 2022 “is the year we elect more working class progressives to Congress.”
“My name is Jessica Mason. I grew up in South Dallas, raised by a mom who worked day and night to keep a roof over our heads. Now, I’m running for Congress in #TX30 to make sure I do everything I can to make this district better for all. Join our fight,” she tweeted Tuesday.
She espouses some pretty progressive ideals, such as “No one who works 40 hours a week should live in poverty,” and “I can't believe I still have to say this: Evictions are inhumane and should not be happening in the middle of a deadly pandemic.”
Johnson announced her retirement in November.
Correction: Rep Eddie-Bernice Johnson announced her retirement. A previous version of this story stated otherwise.
