Texas Republicans Declare Being Gay 'Abnormal'
California congressman wants to use that to whip up Dem enthusiasm in November elections
June might be Pride Month for the lesbian gay, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community, but Texas Republicans see things very differently.
The Republican Party of Texas adopted a platform that included explicitly anti-LGBTQ ideology at its biennial convention on Saturday.
It adopted its latest platform on Saturday at its biennial convention, which includes a description of homosexuality as “an abnormal lifestyle choice.”
Further, the platform also proposes opposition to “all efforts to validate transgender identity.”
A prominent congressman from California took to social media to highlight the bigotry and try to turn it towards higher Democratic turnout in the 2022 midterm elections, coming up in November.
The new 40-page platform contains a “Homosexuality and Gender Issues” section that describes being gay as “an abnormal lifestyle choice.”
It calls for a policy of fighting against special status for members of the LGBTQ communities and protection against criminal or civil penalties for those who oppose homosexuality out of “faith, conviction, or belief in traditional values.”
There is no federal law that protects LGBTQ individuals from discrimination or grants them special status, although the US Supreme Court has acknowledged a right to same-sex marriage since 2015.
Also, two years ago a high court decision found that discrimination in employment on the basis of either sexual orientation or gender identity to be illegal under the terms of the federal Civil Rights Act.
“Republicans are seeking to declare being gay is an “abnormal lifestyle choice.” How about we show them abnormal voter turnout in November? #VotePride,” tweeted Rep Eric Swalwell (D-Calif), a prominent lawmaker and member of the powerful House intelligence and judiciary committees.
With President Biden remaining unpopular, Democrats appear to have a steep climb to hold onto their slim congressional majorities.
