‘That Is A Violation of International Law’: Senator Calls Out Another Violation of Man’s Rights
More Democrats go to El Salvador on behalf of Kilmar Abrego Garcia
The Democratic senator who last week traveled to El Salvador and met with his constituent who was wrongly deported and detained in a notorious prison is publicly calling out yet another violation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s rights.
This comes as several more Democrats on Capitol Hill have flown to El Salvador on behalf of upholding Abrego Garcia’s rights and due process under the law.
A citizen of El Salvador, Abrego Garcia was in the United States legally when he was snatched by federal agents near his home in the Washington DC suburbs and sent without a hearing to an indefinite detention at CECOT, El Salvador’s notorious prison which has been called a “black hole of human rights.”
Like other migrants the Trump administration also condemned to CECOT, Abrego Garcia was denied due process before his deportation and imprisonment.
The Trump administration is taking no action to bring Abrego Garcia back to the United States despite an order to do so by the US Supreme Court.
Van Hollen was in the capital city of San Salvador last week when he finally was allowed to meet with Abrego Garcia after initially being refused.
Back from El Salvador, Van Hollen is calling attention to another of Abrego Garcia’s rights being violated.
“We're fighting for the rule of law. And if you take it away, as I said, for one person, you threaten it for all,” the senator said. “So I met with Abrego Garcia. He's been in a total news blackout. He hasn't been able to communicate with anybody, not his wife, not his lawyer. That is a violation of international law.”
Meanwhile, several other Democratic lawmakers traveled to El Salvador this week: Reps Robert Garcia, of California (no relation to Abrego Garcia); Maxwell Frost, of Florida; Yassamin Ansari, of Arizona; and Maxine Dexter, of Oregon.
The four took the trip to pressure the Trump administration to abide by the Supreme Court order to facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return to the United States.
“While Donald Trump continues to defy the Supreme Court, Kilmar Abrego Garcia is being held illegally in El Salvador after being wrongfully deported,” Rep Garcia said. “That is why we’re here– to remind the American people that kidnapping immigrants and deporting them without due process is not how we do things in America. We are demanding the Trump Administration abide by the Supreme Court decision and give Kilmar and the other migrants mistakenly sent to El Salvador due process in the United States.”
The group took the trip without relying on government funding after a top House Republican denied their request to make it an official congressional delegation, or CODEL.
