‘That Might Even Include Me’: Democrat Wonders If She’ll Become Target Under New FBI Director
Rep Madeleine Dean helped manage a Trump impeachment
A Democratic congresswoman is wondering aloud whether she’ll find herself a target of the FBI after the narrow confirmation of Donald Trump’s controversial pick to run the law-enforcement agency.
The Senate confirmed Kash Patel Thursday as the new FBI director by a narrow margin of 51-49, with Republican with Republican Sens. Susan Collins, of Maine, and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, joining all Democrats in opposing him.
A public defender, federal prosecutor and congressional aide before serving as a national security official in Trump’s first term, Patel is seen as a MAGA loyalist who could do Trump’s bidding against his perceived political opponents.
Patel frequently criticized the agency he now heads as part of an evil “deep state” and which supplied 11 members of the famous “enemies list” Patel published in his 2023 book Government Gangsters.
His social-media alone marked him as part of Trump’s vast troll army rather than the sort of sober lawman you’d expect at the FBI.
Rep Madeleine Dean (D-Pa) wondered whether she’ll end up a target for Patel’s retribution given that she served in one Trump’s impeachments during his first term in office.
“Let’s remember what the FBI is. It is our lead law enforcement agency, 38,000 dedicated public servants who work at the FBI, whether they are agents or analysts, support staff, scientists, technicians, you name it. Most of them very dedicated to protecting us against domestic terror, international terror, protecting us against crime, violent crime, drug crime, cartels and so much more,” Dean said in an appearance on MSNBC. “Do you know what Kash Patel called the January 6 rioters? ‘Political prisoners.’
“What he has asked for is retribution and he has called for it over and over again against — let me see here — he wants to come after any anti-Trump conspirators,” she added. “I suppose that might even include me, since I served on the second impeachment as one of the managers. A sad, solemn honor that I had.”
